The Mayutica Institute for Communication in Medicine (MICM) is dedicated to improving interpersonal communication, collaboration, and wellbeing in the practice of medicine.

The Mayutica Institute teaches and advises on educational curricula at academic and clinical institutions. Using the work refined through our research efforts, we collaborate with organizations to design, lead, and support courses, retreats, workshops, and seminars that support the goals and needs of each institution. Topics are customized; prior topics have included:

  • Empathy skills in the clinical context
  • Power dynamics, body language, and verbal cues
  • Making Mistakes: Resilience and kindness
  • Say Yes: The power of affirmation in clinical communication
  • Medical Improv: Adaptive communication skills in medicine

Sessions have been taught for medical students, residents, fellows, faculty, and interprofessional clinical staff. Settings have included grand rounds, didactics, workshop series, retreats, conferences, and CME events. Mayutica has led and/or advised sessions for:

  • The Cleveland Clinic
  • University of British Columbia
  • Group Health Cooperative
  • Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences
  • State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate
  • Bastyr University
  • Providence Health & Services
  • Washington Academy of Family Physicians
The information you so passionately teach has the capacity to greatly improve medical care and our lives in general. Thanks for sharing.” —  Medical student
